Wren's tallest steeple, a stack of diminishing octagons that a baker on Ludgate Hill is said to have copied for a wedding cake in 1703, fixing the shape for good. It has been Fleet Street's church since printing arrived next door in 1500, and keeps a Journalists' Altar with photographs of reporters killed or held abroad. The crypt, opened by bombing in 1940, holds Roman pavement and a medieval charnel house.
