Consecrated in 1185 and built round in imitation of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, as the English headquarters of the Knights Templar; the long Gothic chancel was added in 1240 for royal burials. Nine effigies of knights lie in the round nave. The church was gutted by fire-bombing in 1941 and rebuilt, and it serves the two Inns of Court around it, with one of the finest choirs in London.
