Finished in 1730, the last and strangest of Hawksmoor's London churches: a Corinthian portico facing one way, an altar facing another, and a tower modelled on the tomb of Mausolus at Halicarnassus, stepped like a pyramid and crowned with a statue of George I in a Roman toga. Lions and unicorns fight around its base. Hogarth put the steeple in the background of Gin Lane.
