James Gibbs finished it in 1726 and the design - a classical portico with the steeple rising behind it - was copied across America and the Empire until it became what a church is supposed to look like. It has sheltered homeless people since the First World War, and broadcasts as well as holds around thirty services a week. The vaulted crypt below is a café and a concert room, with the parish's old gravestones underfoot.
