Finished in 1679 and generally reckoned the finest of Wren's City churches: a coffered dome floating on eight arches over a square plan, worked out here while he was solving the same problem at St Paul's on a far larger scale. In 1987 a round altar of Travertine marble by Henry Moore was placed beneath it, which took a court case to allow. The Samaritans were founded in the church in 1953 by its rector, Chad Varah.
