Manasa Chitra: the Art of Mental Health from Bengaluru to Bethlem

Paintings from a Bangalore asylum in 1957, and from people living with mental illness in Bengaluru now.

Art & designFree

At Bethlem Museum of the Mind.

Some of these were made in occupational therapy at what was then Bangalore Mental Hospital, and reached England through the friendship between its founder M. V. Govindaswamy and Wilhelm Mayer-Gross, a German psychiatrist who had fled to Britain and went out to India in the 1950s; the hospital is now the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences. The rest are recent, shown at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Bengaluru last year and lent by the artists. They are full of movement, colour and jokes — homes, gods, factories, people. Free.
