Sir William Prescott, built in 1929 to lift Thames water up to north London, runs under steam: about a thousand tonnes of engine, sixty-two feet high, and the largest triple-expansion engine still working anywhere. The annual Stirling engine exhibition brings collectors and their hot-air engines, which run on nothing but a difference in temperature.
