The building is the flower market of 1871, iron and glass, from the days when Covent Garden was where London bought its fruit and vegetables; the market left for Nine Elms in 1971 and the museum opened here in 1980. The collection is older than that. The London General Omnibus Company began keeping its retired buses at the start of the twentieth century, the railways added their carriages, and what came down to London Transport now belongs to Transport for London and covers everything that moves people in the city.
The route runs from the top floor down and the galleries are chronological: Victorian London and the world's first Underground, then Digging Deeper on the tube tunnels, On the Surface for the buses and trams, London by Design, London's transport at war, and the hands-on Future Engineers, with the All Aboard play zone for small children. Most of the vehicles can be climbed into. The ticket is valid for a year. The museum also runs the Hidden London tours of disused stations and wartime shelters, and opens its depot in Acton, where the rest of the collection is kept, on a few weekends a year.
