Four theatres have stood on this ground since 1663, and one of them is still working.
West EndWorth it for the building
The oldest theatre site in London still in use. The first opened in Bridges Street in 1663 and burned; the second went up in 1674, the third in 1794, and Benjamin Dean Wyatt's fourth opened on 10 October 1812 and is the one you walk into. Nell Gwyn acted on the earliest of them. George III was shot at in the royal box on 15 May 1800, twice, and missed.
1,996 seats over four levels, restored between 2019 and 2021 and now among the grandest rooms in the West End. The house ghost, the Man in Grey, is said to be the body found bricked into a passage wall in 1848.
