Camden Market is not one market but a run of them along the canal at Camden Lock, spreading back into the Victorian stables and horse hospital that served the railway goods yard behind. Trading began here on a Sunday in 1974 in a timber yard, and grew outward with the music that came with it: this is where the punks bought their boots in the 1970s and where Britpop drank in the 1990s, and the clothes stalls still trade on it.
The food is what is genuinely good now. The stalls in the West Yard and under the stables cook from almost everywhere, portions are cheap, and people eat standing by the water. Free to walk through, open every day, and packed from late morning at the weekend.
