New Spitalfields left Commercial Street for Leyton in 1991 and is the country's biggest wholesale market for exotic fruit and vegetables - the produce the supermarkets do not carry, bought by the greengrocers and restaurants of half of London. Anyone may buy, on one condition: in wholesale quantities, boxes rather than kilos. Some traders deal only in pallets or containers and say so.
You can also simply come and look, and at these hours that is a reasonable thing to want: it opens at midnight and trades until eleven, six days a week. The crush is at the start, and the market's own advice to an occasional visitor is to come later in the session when the site has thinned out. You must wear a yellow hi-vis vest on site - you can be refused entry without one, and the Market Constabulary sells them at the entrance for three pounds. Children under twelve are not admitted at all, and vehicles pay a fee on the way out.
