Green Street runs a mile and a third from Forest Gate down to Upton Park, and of the hundred and forty-odd businesses on it seventeen are jewellers and sixteen sell clothes. The two go together: this is where families come for a wedding, for the gold and for the outfits, and the shops are set up for it - Kashish, Kiran's, G. S. Ghattaura and a dozen more, with the windows banked in 22-carat.
Around them is an ordinary and very busy high street: seven halal butchers, sweet shops, mobile phone shops, thirty places to eat. Boleyn Ground stood at the southern end until 2016 and the match-day trade with it, which the street has had to do without.
