Rye Lane runs a kilometre south from Peckham Rye station and is busy the whole way. The arcades are the thing to know about: Peckham Palms is a courtyard of Black hair and beauty salons, and Kumasi Market and the Peckham Food Hall are indoor markets of small stalls under one roof.
On the street itself are greengrocers selling yam, plantain and scotch bonnet by the box, fabric shops for wax print, phone shops, charity shops, and the chains - Iceland, Tesco, Sports Direct, JD - in between. Twenty-nine places to eat along it. It is a working high street rather than a destination, and it is the reason Peckham feels like Peckham.
