Guided tours worth booking: walks led by people who know the streets, and the bus, river and cycling tours that earn their fare. Each is drawn on the map as the ground it covers, from where it meets.
The village the Mayflower sailed from, and the first tunnel ever driven under a river.
Thu, Fri, Sat & Sun, 14:30Walking
Rotherhithe still reads as a village - a church, a pub on the water, a few lanes - a short walk from Tower Bridge. The Mayflower left from here, and a few hundred yards away Marc and Isambard Brunel drove the Thames Tunnel, the first anywhere under a navigable river, which nearly killed them both and is now carrying trains.
