Büchner died at twenty-three in 1837 leaving the play unfinished, and it has been staged ever since as the first piece of modern drama: a soldier ground down by poverty, medical experiment and humiliation until something gives. Chris Broderick and Rob Shepherd of the Kentish band The Singing Loins wrote the songs, Teresa Howard adapted it for the stage and Michael Oakley directs, with a company of fourteen playing their own instruments. It was first commissioned two decades ago by the Korean company Acom. Two hours and twenty minutes with an interval; £20 in the slips to £65 premium.
