Candlelit cellars off Villiers Street, where the room is the reason to come.
Wine bar
Their own claim is London's oldest wine bar, and the back room makes the case: a barrel-vaulted cellar lit by candles, blackened walls, wooden benches, and news clippings from the 1900s still pinned up. Sherry and madeira come from the cask, and there is a serious cheese and cold meat counter.
Be clear about what it is here for. The list is broad and perfectly good without being the reason to cross London — you come for the atmosphere, which nowhere else in the city has. No reservations, so it fills from about six, and in summer the tables spill out onto Watergate Walk.
