Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

Hampstead Theatre

New plays only, in a purpose-built house behind Swiss Cottage.

Playhouses

Hampstead Theatre has staged first productions since 1959, for most of that time in a portable hut; the present building, on Eton Avenue, opened in 2003 with a main house of about 325 seats and a studio below it. Harold Pinter, Michael Frayn, Mike Leigh and Hanif Kureishi all had early plays here, and the policy has not changed: it does not revive, it commissions.
