Anaïs Mitchell wrote the songs first, as an album, and the show grew backwards out of them, which is why it sounds like nothing else in the West End: New Orleans brass, folk and blues rather than showtunes, played by a band sitting on the stage. Two love stories run against each other - Orpheus and Eurydice, young and broke, and Hades and Persephone, long married and not managing it - and Hades's underworld is a factory town that takes people in when the weather turns. Rachel Chavkin directs. It won eight Tony Awards in New York, including Best Musical, and the cast album took a Grammy.
Danielle de Niese, who sings Handel and Mozart on opera stages, is Persephone; Nathan Sykes is Orpheus. Two hours thirty including the interval, and there is smoke, haze and strobe-like lighting throughout.
