A hundred and eighty seats behind a French chocolate factory, with a habit of sending Sondheim revivals to Broadway.

The Menier Chocolate Company put up the five-storey brick factory between 1865 and 1874, and it is historically protected. The theatre went into a purpose-built room at the back of it in 2004 and holds a hundred and eighty people, which is the whole trick: a musical written for a house four times the size, played close enough that you can see everyone's face, turns out to be a different piece of work.
Sunday in the Park with George went from here and took five Oliviers in 2007, then to Studio 54 with the same two leads. La Cage aux Folles won best musical revival in 2009 and a Tony on Broadway the year after. A Little Night Music went over with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury in it.
It is not only Sondheim - there are new plays and comedy in the season too - but the revivals are why people book without reading the cast list.
