Ivor Novello lived in the flat above it for thirty-eight years, and it took his name half a century after he died.

Sprague opened it in May 1905 as one of a matching pair framing the Waldorf Hotel, the Aldwych Theatre being the other. Novello took the flat on the top floor in 1913 and stayed until his death in 1951, writing most of his musicals there and walking downstairs to work; the theatre was renamed for him in 2005.
About 1,100 seats, historically protected. Mamma Mia! moved in during September 2012 and is still running.
