Jonathan Larson moved Puccini's La Bohème to the East Village of the early 1990s, with rent arrears in place of consumption and HIV in place of tuberculosis, and died of an aortic dissection the night before the first preview, aged thirty-five. He never saw it performed. The score is rock rather than Broadway, and the writing about a group of friends keeping each other alive through an epidemic is the reason it has lasted.
Luke Sheppard directs this production, and Gaten Matarazzo plays Mark, the film-maker whose camera frames the story. Two hours thirty including the interval. The production carries content warnings for HIV and AIDS, bereavement, drug use, suicide, sex and sex work, strong language, smoking, haze and strobe lighting.
