Walter Emden built it for Frank Wyatt and Violet Melnotte and it opened on 10 September 1892 as the Trafalgar Square Theatre. Two things that happened in it travelled a long way. David Belasco's one-act Madame Butterfly played here in 1900, Puccini saw it, and the opera came out of that evening. And on 27 December 1904 J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up was given for the first time, on this stage.
It was the Duke of York's for most of its life and took its present name in 2026, for Sir Tom Stoppard, who died in November 2025 and whose Rock 'n' Roll and Arcadia had both played here. 640 seats on three levels, historically protected at grade II, and run by ATG.
