Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

Trinity Laban

Herzog & de Meuron's Stirling Prize building in Deptford, and the country's dance conservatoire.

PlayhousesWorth it for the building

Rudolf Laban's school moved to Deptford in 2003 into a building by Herzog & de Meuron — coloured polycarbonate over concrete, translucent in daylight and glowing at night, with corridors that curve so dancers never walk in a straight line. It won the Stirling Prize the year it opened.

It is a conservatoire rather than a producing house, so what is on is student and graduate work, visiting companies and its own festivals, in the Bonnie Bird Theatre. The music half of the school is at the Old Royal Naval College up the road.
