Sir Thomas Gresham's will founded a college to give free lectures to Londoners, and it still does, four centuries on, with professors appointed for three-year terms in the original seven subjects and a few modern ones - astronomy, geometry, music, law, physic, rhetoric, divinity, and now business and the environment - giving series that anyone can walk into without a ticket or a qualification. Most are in Barnard's Inn Hall, a fourteenth-century hall hidden in a courtyard off Holborn that is itself worth the visit; others move to larger halls when the speaker is a draw. Everything is filmed and put online, but the hall is the point.
