Richard Westmacott's Achilles of 1822, five and a half metres of bronze made from thirty-three tons of guns taken at Salamanca, Vitoria, Toulouse and Waterloo, was a tribute to Wellington from a subscription of British women. It was the first naked statue on public view in London and the fig leaf was added after complaints and has been chipped off and replaced more than once. It stands at the Hyde Park Corner end of the park, with Wellington's own house across the road and Wellington's arch beyond it, and it is not Achilles at all but a copy of one of the horse-tamers on the Quirinal in Rome, given a shield.
