Samuel Courtauld made his money in rayon and spent it, in the 1920s, on the French painters the National Gallery would not yet buy; in 1932 he gave the pictures and the money for an institute to teach the history of art, and the two have lived together ever since, in the north block of Somerset House since 1989. The collection is small, some 530 paintings and 26,000 drawings and prints, and almost all of it is first-rate: Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, Van Gogh's Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, Cézanne's Card Players and his Montagne Sainte-Victoire, Gauguin's Nevermore, Seurat, Renoir's La Loge, Rubens's oil sketches, Cranach's Adam and Eve, Botticelli, and the medieval ivories and enamels given by other collectors since. A three-year rebuilding reopened it in November 2021 with the great rooms restored and the paintings on one floor. The commission in the entrance hall is free; the rest needs a ticket.
