Dora Gordine was born in the Baltic, raised in Tallinn and trained in Paris, and by the 1930s she was being called the finest woman sculptor of her time; in 1936 she and her third husband, the Hon. Richard Hare, a scholar of Russian art, built this house on Kingston Vale to her own design, a brick block with a studio lit from the north, a gallery to show her work and a flat on top with a roof terrace looking into Richmond Park. That a woman designed a house around her own work and career was rare enough then to be the point of it. She worked here for fifty-five years, until her death in 1991, and the house holds the largest collection of her bronzes, the heads and figures of dancers, diplomats and friends, with Hare's icons, porcelain and paintings from imperial Russia in the rooms below. Kingston University restored it and opened it as a museum in 1996, and it is free.
