The only building Turner ever designed, built as his own retreat from London.
Artist's house
Also in Museums.
Turner was a painter with an architect's habit, and this small villa of 1813 — his design, with advice from his friend John Soane — is the one building he had built. He kept it thirteen years and installed his father in it as gardener. By the time the trust took it on it had been subdivided and was close to derelict; the restoration put it back to the original plan, so the rooms are small, bare and lit the way he wanted them, which is the whole reason to come. It shuts for the winter.
