In 1347 Edward III, having starved Calais for a year, agreed to spare the town if six of its leading citizens came out to him barefoot with ropes round their necks to be hanged. They came, and his queen, Philippa, begged them off. Rodin made the group for Calais in 1889 and it is the one that made him: six separate figures, each facing his death differently, and no hero among them. This is one of twelve casts and was bought for the nation in 1911, placed on a high plinth Rodin would have hated. It is the greatest sculpture standing in the open in London.
