Charles Saatchi opened his gallery in a former paint factory in St John's Wood in 1985 to show what he was buying, and what he bought in the 1990s, Damien Hirst's shark, Tracey Emin's bed, the Chapman brothers and the rest of the Young British Artists, made his name and theirs; the Sensation show of 1997 drew 300,000 people to the Royal Academy. After five years in County Hall the gallery moved in 2008 into the Duke of York's Headquarters, a barracks of 1801 on the King's Road, with fifteen high white rooms across 70,000 square feet, and in 2019 it became an independent charity. It no longer shows Saatchi's collection. The programme is large themed and single-artist exhibitions, photography prizes and graduate shows, with several rooms free at any time and a ticket for the headline show.
