William Crabtree's building of 1936 hangs its floors behind an unbroken curtain of glass that follows the corner - the first of its kind here, and still startling from the square. Inside it is a John Lewis department store, owned by its staff like the rest of the partnership, with a top-floor cafe looking over the rooftops of Chelsea.
