Founded in 1744 as a book auctioneer, Sotheby's has been on New Bond Street since 1917, and its pre-sale exhibitions are the least-known free galleries in London: a Monet, a Bacon or a Basquiat on the wall for three or four days, hung as well as any museum would, with a specialist on hand who will talk. The galleries run through to St George Street at the back, and there is a café off the front hall.
