The whole collection route is free. It runs chronologically along the length of the building: Historic and Early Modern British Art from the Tudors to the Second World War, then Modern and Contemporary from 1940 to now — the Pre-Raphaelites, Hockney, Bridget Riley, Lubaina Himid, and the portraits of people who commissioned them looking out at you for four hundred years. Off the middle sits the largest display of J. M. W. Turner anywhere: he left the nation nearly everything in his studio on condition it stayed together, and it did. Chris Ofili's Requiem, a wall painting made for Khadija Saye and the dead of Grenfell Tower, is on show indefinitely and free. Commissions and artworks are scattered through the building and the garden as well as the galleries.
