Van Gogh came to London in 1873 to work at Goupil's Covent Garden branch and took a room here with the widow Ursula Loyer and her daughter Eugenie, walking to the Strand each morning. He was happy, he told his brother Theo, until he told Eugenie he loved her and learned she was engaged; he left in August 1874, and the religion, the misery and the painting all came after. The house was bought in 2012, put back to its 1873 plan and opened in 2019, and it works as much as a studio as a museum - artists take up residencies in it, and their work is in the rooms alongside the restoration. The blue plaque is from 1973.
