Aux Merveilleux de Fred Northcote Road

A tea room and a pavement terrace, on Battersea's best shopping street.

The merveilleux is the thing: two discs of meringue sandwiched with whipped cream, rolled in shaved chocolate and left to soften for a day, which is a speciality of Lille rather than Paris and still rare here. Beside them are cramiques — an enriched brioche shot through with raisins or pearl sugar — and thick waffles filled to order. Everything is made on the premises. Northcote Road still runs to fishmongers, butchers and a street market. There is a tea room inside and tables out on the pavement, so this is one to sit down in rather than carry away, and it keeps the same hours seven days a week.
