Aux Merveilleux de Fred South Kensington

A tea room in the French quarter, five minutes from the museums.

The merveilleux is the thing: two discs of meringue sandwiched with whipped cream, rolled in shaved chocolate and left to soften for a day, which is a speciality of Lille rather than Paris and still rare here. Beside them are cramiques — an enriched brioche shot through with raisins or pearl sugar — and thick waffles filled to order. Everything is made on the premises. Old Brompton Road sits in the middle of London's French quarter — the lycée is round the corner — which is the natural home for a patisserie from Lille. A room to sit in, and close enough to the Natural History and Science Museums to be the stop afterwards.
