Battersea's 1893 town hall, half of it burnt in 2015 and rebuilt as a ruin on purpose.

E. W. Mountford designed it in 1891 and it opened as Battersea Town Hall in 1893, all marble and mosaic and municipal confidence. It became an arts centre in the 1970s and has since specialised in work that uses the building itself: audiences are led through corridors, offices and the old council chamber.
On 13 March 2015 fire took the Grand Hall. Eighty firefighters saved the front of the building, which reopened twenty-six hours later, and the hall came back in September 2018 rebuilt by Haworth Tompkins with the scorching left visible and the lost plaster ceiling replaced by an open lattice. The decision not to restore it to what it was is the reason to go and look.
