The best baking in London. Bread, cakes, viennoiserie and patisserie worth crossing town for.
Japanese patisserie on Southampton Street: mille crepe, jiggly cheesecake, mochi made fresh.
Mei went to Japan in 1993 to learn the language and stayed five years, living next door to a bakery; her grandfather had run one in China when she was a child, so she already loved sweets and Japan taught her how they could be made. What she could not find on coming back was the restraint — everything here tasted sugar-heavy against what she had got used to — so she started Sakurado in 2017 out of the back of a fish and chip shop in Putney. The counter is the Japanese canon done properly: mille crepe cakes stacked from twenty-odd thin pancakes with matcha or black tea cream between them, the cheesecake that wobbles when the tray moves, chiffon sponge shortcake under fresh cream and strawberries, burnt Basque cheesecake, and mochi pounded fresh and filled with cream. The sweetness is deliberately dialled down, which is the whole idea: you can taste what the thing is made of. The name means house of the cherry blossoms, after the Tokyo street where she lived.
