Lanes & alleys
A medieval track through the convent garden, built up between 1631 and 1728 and never widened, so in places you can touch both sides of it. Turner was born above his father's barber's shop at number 21 in 1775. Voltaire lodged here in 1727 while he was exiled from Paris. Rules opened at number 34 in 1798 and has served game and oysters from the same rooms ever since, which makes it the oldest restaurant in London. At the eastern end is Corpus Christi, a Catholic church that has stood here since 1874 and is worth putting your head into.
