Marylebone Lane

A street that bends because it follows a buried river, past small shops the whole way.

Lanes & alleys

The bend in Marylebone Lane, following the buried Tyburn.

Everything around it is the straight Georgian grid of the Portman and Cavendish estates; Marylebone Lane wanders, because it follows the course of the Tyburn, which runs in a culvert underneath. The kink gives it a village feel and a new view every few yards: a milliner, a shoemaker, a cheesemonger, a butcher and a couple of pubs, with the red-brick mansion blocks and a corner turret rising above.
