Lloyd Square

Paired villas with pediments round a garden — a London square that looks nothing like the others.

The pedimented pairs on Lloyd Square, late afternoon.

The Lloyd Baker estate was laid out in the 1820s on land the family had held since the previous century, and its architects did something almost no one else in London did: instead of a continuous terrace, semi-detached pairs, each pair sharing one broad pediment so that two houses read as a single temple front. Yellow brick, no stucco, and a garden in the middle. The estate ran downhill from here to the New River, and the streets around it are all of a piece.
