The UK's only public gallery for illustration, founded by Quentin Blake, now open in the old New River Head waterworks in Clerkenwell.

Quentin Blake, who drew Roald Dahl's books and a great deal else, founded the House of Illustration in 2002 to give the art form a home of its own, the only public gallery in the country devoted to it, and from 2014 it worked out of a building at Granary Square behind King's Cross. In 2026 it reopened under his name at New River Head on Rosebery Avenue, the site where the New River, the man-made channel that brought Hertfordshire spring water to London from 1613, ended in a round pond; the engine house, coal stores and windmill base of the waterworks are now three galleries, the country's only library of illustration, a café and newly planted gardens. The exhibitions run from children's picture books through political cartoons, manga and advertising to the drawn edge of fine art, and change through the year. One ticket covers the whole site.
