The Covent Garden branch of the Florentine gelateria Idilio Badiani started in 1932, tucked into Mercer Walk rather than out on the piazza, which makes it a better place to stand with a cone. Buontalenti - egg-rich, barely flavoured with anything but cream - is the house one, named for the Medici engineer said to have invented it.
