The sweet course as a destination: gelato and ice cream, cakes and patisserie, chocolate, and the dessert bars where pudding is the whole point. Bread and the morning are next door, in Bakeries.
Turin chocolate and gelato, with a wall of chocolate moving behind the shopfront.
Gelato & ice creamChocolate
Venchi has made chocolate in Turin since 1878, which is where gianduja comes from - the hazelnut and cocoa paste the Piedmontese invented when Napoleon's blockade cut the cocoa supply and they had to make it go further. The London shops sell the bars and the loose chocolates by weight and scoop gelato at the same counter. The Soho shop has the chocolate wall, a sheet of it running behind glass, which is what stops people on the pavement.
