Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

Soho Theatre

Three stages on Dean Street, and the room most British comedians play before anyone has heard of them.

The company began in the early 1970s as the Soho Poly, a lunchtime theatre in a basement off Great Portland Street, and moved into a converted building on Dean Street in 2000 on an £8 million lottery grant. It has three spaces, the largest holding about 150.

What it is known for is stand-up. A comedian's Edinburgh hour usually comes here next, and a great many people who now fill arenas played this building first. It also produces new plays and cabaret, and the bar stays open later than the theatre. A second house opened in Walthamstow in 2025.
