The actor-manager who made Shakespeare a national cult built this octagonal Ionic temple on the lawn of his Thames villa and filled it with relics: a chair reputedly made from the mulberry tree Shakespeare planted at Stratford, and Roubiliac's marble statue of the playwright, modelled on Garrick himself, now in the British Museum and represented here by a copy. Restored in 1999, it holds a small exhibition on Garrick and the Shakespeare Jubilee of 1769 he staged at Stratford, and volunteers open it on summer afternoons.
