The address did not exist when Conan Doyle invented it in 1887, and when Baker Street was extended the numbers were held by a building society that employed a secretary to answer Holmes's post. Since 1990 a house of the right date has borne the number by special permission and been fitted out as the rooms Watson described: the sitting room with its chemistry bench and the Persian slipper of tobacco, the study with the bullet-pocked wall, and waxwork scenes from the stories on the floors above.
