Built in the Edwardian years for the antiquarian bookseller Francis Edwards and said to be the first purpose-built bookshop in England, the long back room has two oak galleries under a skylight and a stained-glass window at the end. James Daunt bought it in 1990 and shelved travel writing, fiction and history together by country, so that the shelf on Italy holds Lampedusa beside a guidebook; the arrangement has been copied everywhere and the shop has spawned a chain, but this is the original.
