John Doubleday's statue of 1999 was paid for by the Abbey National, which occupied the block that took in 221 and for decades answered Holmes's letters. He stands at the Marylebone Road entrance to the station, pipe in hand, looking up the street towards the address Conan Doyle invented in 1887; the tiles on the platforms below carry his silhouette. Doubleday had already made a Holmes for Meiringen, beside the Reichenbach Falls.
