Thomas Brock's monument to Queen Victoria, unveiled in 1911 by her grandson, with the Kaiser present. She sits facing the Mall, in marble, with Motherhood, Justice and Truth on the other three sides and a gilt bronze Victory with Courage and Constancy above; the fountains and the bronze groups of Progress, Peace, Manufacture and Agriculture round the basin came later. Aston Webb designed the setting, the rond-point and the balustraded gardens, as one composition with the widened Mall and Admiralty Arch at the far end. It is the pedestal for every royal balcony photograph and the reason the crowd has somewhere to stand.
